The musical Wir sind das Volk (We Are the People) performed by the Ljubljana band Laibach will be staged on 2 July as one of the largest projects within the European Capital of Culture Fortress of Peace programme. The musical, inspired by the provocative postmodern dramaturgical works of Heiner Müller, will be performed for the first time in Novi Sad at the Veterans’ Home, starting at 10 p.m.
Within the Fortress of Peace programme arch, which begins in the second half of June, Novi Sad – European Capital of Culture promotes a culture of peace and dialogue as the main and current messages, but also critical reflection on the terrible causes and consequences of war. Laibach’s musical will point out some of these causes in an artistic and unusual way, but also try to give relevant answers. This project was premiered at the HAU Theatre in Berlin, where Heiner Müller himself once worked in the famous Berlin Ensemble, a theatre founded by Bertolt Brecht. Inheriting Brecht’s revolutionary inspiration, Müller thematised the problems of nationalism and the development of socialist society, which is why he was often faced with censorship. This musical – scenic performance represents a fusion of Müller’s stage expression with the provocative music of Laibach, while in terms of content it is a combination of anti-nationalist and anti-repressive ideas.
Tickets for the musical are available from June 14, at all Gigs Tix ticket offices as well as on their website. The price of a ticket will be RSD 1500, and the 3 + 1 package deal (one free ticket for every three purchased) will be available only at the ticket office in Pariski Magazin from 15 to 22 June (or while supplies last). In case of bad weather, the event will be moved to the City Concert Hall, where the seating arrangements will remain unchanged.
Due to organisation and implementation of the music and stage performance of the musical Wir sind das Volk, a road closure will temporarily take place in Dunavska Street, from the Belgrade Quay towards Ive Lole Ribara Street in Novi Sad. This closure will take place on 1 and 2 July from 6 p.m. to midnight.
The Fortress of Peace programme arch, one of the eight programme arches of the European Capital of Culture 2022, critically reflects on the causes and consequences of war conflicts and promotes a culture of peace and reconciliation.
