19/07/2022

The ‘Novi Sad — European Capital of Culture’ Foundation will launch an urban-architectural open call to select the best design for the complex of the future Memorial Centre dedicated to all innocent victims of the Pogrom in South Bačka in January 1942.

The Memorial Centre, the most significant memorial project of the city and South Bačka, will be placed next to the Creative District, giving the location a new value. In this manner, it brings the Fortress of Peace programme arch of the European Capital of Culture to a full circle, which left a significant mark on the culture of remembrance, reflection on the consequences of war and promotion of peace.

Exactly eighty years from the terrifying Pogrom, which included Serbs and Jews, the City of Novi Sad, in cooperation with the Eparchy of Bačka and the ‘Novi Sad – European Capital of Culture’ Foundation, formed a team for further coordination of activities in the project of the future Memorial Centre, in order to access the production of technical documentation after selecting the winning solutions.

The selection jury will include the most relevant representatives of the Eparchy of Bačka, the Jewish community, and the Historical Archives of the city of Novi Sad, and the experts – architects, will be the most numerous members.

The plan is to launch the public urban-architectural call on 8 August 2022.

The call aims to select the highest quality urban-architectural solution in accordance with the competition task, programme requirements, urban conditions for arrangement and construction, and the potential of the location, in which the initial ideas and mission of the Memorial Centre will be integrated and implemented.
