New Architecture Practices within the Kaleidoscope of Culture
06/09/2021

fter the four-day opening in Creative District, the fourth Kaleidoscope of Culture in Novi Sad will bring architecture through exhibitions, panel discussions, workshops and other content into focus during the first week, until 10 September.

The Kaleidoscope of Culture, as the yearlong project, in addition to connecting local and European art scene, thus presenting the culture of togetherness, is based on the idea of implementing programmes across the city, at iconic locations, and at new, restored spaces, which is the reason why architecture is one of the most important forms of art.

Around 100 female architects will present themselves within the ‘Višeslojnost’ exhibition at the site of Creative District, in the Liman Cultural Station, which was presented as the good example of contemporary architecture in Vojvodina at the Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic Arts itself, on 6 September, at 7 p.m., and it will last until Thursday, 9 September. The exhibition was organised by the Society of Female Architects (ŽAD) and Arhitekton.

The main programme of the exhibition was dedicated to works by the members in the field of architecture, interior design, urbanism, protection and communication, while the topic of the exhibition illustrates the multi-layered influence of female architects in other creative disciplines – graphic design, illustration, textile design, industrial design, fashion design, costume, scenography, make-up, gastronomy, IT, management in culture, and many other. In addition to the exhibition, the two panel discussions on the topic of ‘Višeslojnost – arhitektura scene (iskustva festivala)’ (en. Multilayerdness – stage architecture (festival experience)) and ‘Multilayerdness – architecture and exhibitions’ will be organised on 7 and 8 September.

New places at the Kaleidoscope of Culture – a unique picture of diversity in Novi Sad

For four years now, the ‘Novi Sad – European Capital of Culture’ Foundation has taken great efforts to reconstruct the small neighbourhood spaces, in cooperation with local communities and experts from the Association of Novi Sad Architects, with the aim to expand the content during the Kaleidoscope of Culture to all parts of the city.

This is the reason why 10 new places were opened in July, while in late August, after the open call, another two locations have been chosen for the purposes of implementing the projects by staff members: the viewpoint above the tunnel after the Liberty Bridge and the green surface on the Patrijarha Pavla Boulevard, which were selected by the expert jury.

‘Stanice od/do zemlje’ workshops by the architect Dragana Kojičić, known for many accomplishments in earth architecture, will be implemented at five new places of 36 existing in Novi Sad and its surroundings. Dragana also organised the First Balkan Conference on earth architecture thus bringing the world-famous lecturers from 11 countries and guests from 32 countries to Titel. Within the ‘Stanice od/do zemlje’ workshop, culture reaches different parts of Novi Sad and its surroundings. Therefore, the workshops will be held at new places in Kovilj, Stepanovićevo, Ledinci, Detelinara and Novo Naselje, on 6 and 7 September.

Serbian Athens in dance moves

The architecture week brings the premiere of the ‘Novi Sad kroz ples’ (en. Novi Sad Through Dance) short film by the Novi Sad choreographer Aleksandra Čavić, in the Liman Cultural Station on 8 September. The project, being one of the 30 selected projects by local artists within the call for this year’s Kaleidoscope of Culture, promotes the cultural heritage of Novi Sad and contemporary dance, thus presenting numerous locations in the city in a completely new way – through dance.

You can find programme, timetable and locations within the architecture week here.

After the architecture week, the performing arts week, which lasts from 11 until 17 September, will be opened with the traditional Korzo. The third week is reserved for literature from 18 until 23 September, the visual arts week lasts from 24 until 30 September, while the last week will be marked with applied arts from 1 until 8 October.
