Novi Sad is in a hurry to prepare for the year in which it will be the holder of one of the most prestigious titles – the title of European Capital of Culture. A kind of overture to what 2022 will look like in the city of culture will be the Project 22, which will be presented by ‘Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture’ Foundation and NEO Festival– non-classical festival of classical music. The Project 22, resting on the ‘4 New Bridges’ slogan and through the principles of the European Capital of Culture project – decentralization, connecting the local and European scene and music as a universal language, will symbolically present the concept of the European Capitals of Culture programme for 2022 from 11 June to 3 July, i.e. during 22 days. The concept of the programme in the title is structured in eight programme arches, with a programme stream that unites them – Visit Novi Sad platform.

Great and renowned names of music, as well as new, young talents from several countries – Serbia, Austria, Germany, Uzbekistan, Japan, Hungary, Croatia, France will perform at numerous locations throughout Novi Sad and its surroundings, including Network of cultural stations, the Gallery of Matica Srpska, the Synagogue, the Katolička Porta, the Petrovaradin Fortress, Brankovo Kolo and Sremski Karlovci. Through the very diversity of performers that Project 22 will gather, the combination of experience and youth, local, European and world scene in every corner of the city, it hints at what awaits us in 2022.

Project 22 will also be an interesting combination of musical genres and styles, thus the programme will feature the famous musician and songwriter Rambo Amadeus with the Novi Sad Camerata Orchestra performing his Eco Opera ‘Pasija po Steli’, and the Simon Matišić Quartet from Zagreb with jazz arrangements of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart compositions, Youth Philharmonic of the ‘Isidor Bajić’ Music School under the baton of conductor Tamara Adamov Petijević, young but already a cellist of international career, Irena Josifoska, as well as some of the most prominent ensembles in this area – Camerata Novi Sad, Novi Sad Brass Quintet, ‘Accordionist’ orchestra from Kragujevac, Metamorphosis Ensemble, Flute Ensemble of the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad and others.

French concert pianist Michel Dalberto, violinist Benjamin Ziervogel and concertmaster of the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra, then Japanese artists – cellist Anet Jakovčić (USA/Japan), flutist Mutsumini Ito Kana Matsui, who come with the support of the EU Japan Fest will give the European and world dimension to the whole project.

György Ach, violinist and violist, is coming from Hungary, and the Flute Ensemble of the Music Academy from Zagreb is coming from Croatia. Kamerata Balkania, a chamber orchestra composed of the most brilliant young virtuosos in the region, as well as many others, will also perform within the project.

You can find the full program of Project 22, with exact schedules and locations below. The entrance to all concerts is free of charge.

The opening ceremony of the title year in Novi Sad is planned for 13 January 2022 within Doček 7530, and through the eight mentioned programme arches, which will now symbolically present Project 22, the whole title year will be marked by topics such as interculturalism, women’s creativity, migration, peace, ecology, community, art of marginalized groups, etc.
