For the past few days in Mercator center the citizens of Novi Sad had the opportunity to contribute to the Novi Sad candidacy for European Capital of Culture. On 2021 boxes with graphically presented visual identity of the candidacy they were asked to find concepts related to the project Novi Sad 2021, and the city of Novi Sad.

The youngest citizens led this action, they made drawings, circle letters and wrote messages such as: „Novi Sad, the best city, the best people!“, „Novi Sad, a city for all people“, signed their names, underlined the four „bridges“ of the candidacy Hope, Rainbow, Freedom and New and once again has shown that Novi Sad is unique for its mild and well-minded citizens.

The culture of a city does not consist only of its institutions, buildings and history, but above all – the people, and through participation and support of the citizens to the candidacy for the European Capital of Culture, the citizens of Novi Sad have proved this again.
European Capital of Culture was established in order to highlight the richness and diversity of European cultures, strengthen cultural ties among Europeans, connect people from different European countries, meet other cultures, promote mutual understanding and strengthen the sense of Europeanness. Novi Sad 2021, as a platform for the development of creative potentials of Novi Sad, aims to motivate and inspire workers in culture, but also all citizens to reconsider the current value and to set new goals towards democratic cultural development of the city. The contemporary identity of Novi Sad, revitalization of cultural heritage, reconstruction of old and opening of new spaces for culture, development of international and inter-sectoral cooperation, fostering intercultural dialogue, decentralization of culture, developing cultural participation of citizens, are just some of the principles of cultural development to which the project Novi Sad 2021 stands for.
