New Mural in Novi Sad – Democratisation of Classical Art
04/10/2017

Citizens were thrilled during the creation of the mural, which became part of Novi Sad on Monday.

The facade of a building at Trg Neznanog Junaka (Unknown Soldier Square) has a new mural since Monday. Julien de Casabianca, French-Corsican visual artist, displayed, in a magnificent way, the motif from a painting that is part of the collection of the Gallery of Matica Srpska – ‘Angel of Peace I’ by Stevan Aleksić (1876-1923).

Until 17 September, the Gallery of Matica Srpska hosts the exhibition displaying the photographs of murals that Mr Casabianca placed in cities across the world.

Artist finds inspiration for these murals in museums he visits, and he states that he wishes to bring them back to life. He doesn’t choose the images, but they find and inspire him. The character from the painting by Stevan Aleksić has made a strong impression on him, and he wishes that each visitor to Novi Sad projects their own ideas to his work.

The creation of this mural was part of the Outings artistic project envisaged by Mr Casabianca, and so far it was implemented in numerous cities around the world, inspired by artistic heritage.

According to Tijana Palkovljević Bugarski, Director of the Gallery of Matica Srpska, Novi Sad joined the family of cities that have works of art from the local museums on their facades. This is, according to Ms Palkovljević Bugarski, democratisation of classical art that creates dialogue between works of art, museums and citizens.

The creation of the mural followed a workshop for twenty young people 14-19 years of age, who have applied to the open call.
