‘Kaleidoscope of Culture’: We Celebrate the First Birthday of Egység
06/09/2019

More than 900 programmes and 70,000 visitors marked first 365 days of the Egység Cultural Station (Antona Čehova Street no. 4), which celebrates its first birthday. Theatre play, performance, concerts, workshops for children – diverse programme on 7 and 8 September, with the presence of locals and citizens of Novi Sad from different parts of the city, who are welcome, will mark the first working year, within the ‘Kaleidoscope of Culture’.

The Egység was opened at the place of the former gun range in 2018, with the idea that each contemporary cultural station holds, which is the preservation of architectural cultural heritage, decentralisation of culture and activation of local community, in this case, in Grbavica.

Best part of the programme was dedicated to the youngest citizens, in terms of education and quality free time, and most of the programmes (80%) supported the non-institutional scene.

‘The Egység CC team was amazed with community development, cultural and educational programme. We created the real cultural oasis in Grbavica by putting our effort in our own production or in cooperation with institutions, associations, individuals. Here you can attend a great variety of programmes, relax in the garden, play basketball on the court or work in open offices. All of this seemed impossible a year ago, but we are already planning how much we can achieve in the following year. This wouldn’t be possible without engaged fellow citizens. We are always there for them and at their service’, said Kristina Nestorović, coordinator of the Egység Cultural Station.

The first day of celebration starts with the 30-minute magic show ‘Volare’, implemented in cooperation with Children’ Cultural Centre, on 7 September at 10 a.m. The show is followed by the creative workshop ‘Šašavi Zec iz Šešira’, and visitors will have a chance to see the interactive performance ‘Ko se Šunja iza Žbunja’ around 11:15 a.m.

The afternoon programme starts with the Afternoon Party on Saturday at 5 p.m., and highlight of the first day of birthday will be the ‘Kuva se Kuva’ children play by the Čarolija Creative Studio, which starts at 7:00 p.m.

On Sunday, we will have a chance to enjoy the afternoon programme only, and the focus will be the promotion of hip-hop subculture and dance party.

The Street Art Performance starts at 4 p.m. The Streetwise Association will be in charge of good music and atmosphere, while graffiti artists, together with Juraj Ďuriš, guest from Slovakia and street artist, will embellish the environment of the cultural station with their creative work.

The celebration will end in the spirit of past times, thus the atmosphere will be warmed up with ‘60 hits at 7:30 p.m., while VIS Limunada, Belgrade band that will send us back in time and give us the charm of former dance parties, will perform at 20:21.

The Kaleidoscope of Culture is the programme arch by the ‘Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture’, which turns Novi Sad into the ‘city of scene’ through the culture of communion for the second time, at more than 80 locations, from 24 August until 30 September.   Part of the ‘Kaleidoscope of Culture’ are Street Musicians Festival, Piano City, Comics Weekend, Festival of Chamber Music, etc.

It connects spaces and programmes, as well as the actors themselves: the ‘Kaleidsocope’ presents a unique image of the diversity of Novi Sad through multiple arts, with its cultural institutions, non-institutional scene, artists and citizens themselves. With more than 400 programmes, everyone will have a chance to design their own kaleidoscope of culture.
