Street dance, classical music on the boulevard, two festivals, two exhibitions, comics weekend, a movable cultural station Caravan reaches the Rectorate – this is just part of the events that will mark the third week of the ‘Kaleidoscope of Culture’ in Novi Sad.
The second Korzo is scheduled for Saturday, 14 September, with a symbolic start at 8:21 p.m. (20:21) when Mihailo Pupin Boulevard will be transformed into former promenade. Korzo revives the spirit of past times bringing classical music, in an unconventional way, closer to everybody. The Vojvodina Symphony Orchestra, Rita Kinka, pianist, and Robert Lakatoš, violinist, will perform.
Classical music is planned for the end, and chamber music for the start of the third week of the ‘Kaleidoscope of Culture’. Tonight, 9 September, at 8.21 p.m. (20:21), the ‘Oscar in Novi Sad’ concert, which will open the second Chamber Music Festival in Novi Sad implemented by the Novi Sad Wind Quintet, will be held in the Synagogue.
Music from the ‘Capernaum’ film, which won the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival and was also nominated for the Oscar, Golden Palm and Golden Globe, will be performed at the concert. The citizens of Novi Sad will have a chance to hear the original music from the film an feel the glamour of Hollywood and the famous film festivals.
Movable cultural station continues its journey
The Caravan mobile station, which was in Podbara last week, reaches the Rectorate of the University of Novi Sad. The new gathering will be tomorrow, 10 September, at 6 p.m., and the team from the ‘Šolja Mleka’ Association will be in charge of the programme again. In addition to music, socializing and relaxation, the citizens of Novi Sad will have a chance to see the exhibition of collages by Vania Janković, based on the motifs of Gogol’s story ‘Nose’.
The Caravan continues its mission, activations of local communities and the possibility of making cultural content accessible to everyone, in Banoštor on Thursday, 12 September. The Caravan will support the artistic revival of the old German church – St. Rudolf’s Church within the Danube Dialogues from 7 p.m.
Dancing buildings
While the Caravan revives different parts of Novi Sad and Zone 021, the authentic ‘Bodies in Urban Spaces’ event on 10 September at 12 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., will revive the buildings in the city centre.
During the performance, dancers will improvise and give the audience a chance to experience the space they go through every day in a completely different way. The gathering place is a yellow mailbox at the Liberty Square. The author of this concept is Austrian choreographer and performer, Willi Dorner, who cooperated with the ‘Groove’ Dance Association in Novi Sad.
The ‘Time Machine’ festival and the comics weekend in Svilara
Part of this year’s ‘Kaleidoscope of Culture’ is the traditional 13th Novi Sad Comics Weekend. The Svilara Cultural Station will be a true treasure trove of the ninth art on 13 September from 4 p.m. and on 14 September from 12 p.m. until the evening. This year’s festival focuses on local authors who had significant editions abroad but also young artists, who are still working on their affirmation. Planned guests of the comics weekend are Thierry Zor, Alen Ćurin, Istok Sitar, Petar Meseldžija, Gradimir Smuđa and many others.
The Svilara Cultural Station will be the place of the ‘Time Machine – Festival of Animated Memories’ festival on 14 September from 11 p.m. Throughout the day, the audience will have a chance to get acquainted with Novi Sad from a different point of view, through an exhibition of moving pictures, animated old photographs, showing short video forms about the city, filming visitors in front of a special canvas, entertaining content for children, masquerade. The festival is implemented in cooperation with Videomedeja and ‘Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture’.
World famous painters and works of Serbian visual artist in cultural institutions
The exhibition of the famous French photographer, Félix Nadar ‘Portrait of a Time’ will be opened in the Gallery of Matica Srpska on 13 September at 8 p.m. The exhibition consists of photographs of the most significant figures from the world of French and European culture and art from the 19th century – Baudelaire, Manet, Vern, Hugo, Bernard, etc. The exhibition is implemented by the French Institute, the Gallery of Matica Srpska, the National Gallery of Photography Paris and the ‘Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture’.
The ‘Milica Zorić Tapestries: A Synthesis of Heritage and Modernism’ exhibition, consisting of 28 tapestries from 1959 until 1971 and photographs and documents that will be revealed for the first time, will be open in the Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection on 12 September at 8 p.m. The idea is to adequately appreciate the contribution of visual artist Milica Zorić to modern art, as well as to emphasize the importance of two legacies – the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade and the Legacies of Rodoljub Čolaković and Milica Zorić in the Museum of Semberija in Bijeljina, which cooperated in this exhibition.
The ‘Kaleidoscope of Culture’ is the programme arch of the ‘Nov Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture’ project, which turns Novi Sad into the ‘city of scene’ at more than 80 locations from 24 to 30 August. Part of the ‘Kaleidoscope of Culture’ are Street Musicians Festival, Piano City, Comics Weekend, Festival of Chamber Music, etc.
It connects spaces and programmes, as well as the actors themselves: the ‘Kaleidoscope’ presents a unique image of the diversity of Novi Sad through multiple arts, with its cultural institutions, non-institutional scene, artists and citizens themselves. With more than 400 programmes, everyone will have a chance to design their own kaleidoscope of culture.
