Zorba the Greek, Don Quixote, Cleopatra – the Ballet of Cairo Opera brings scenes from the world-famous ballet performances to Novi Sad.

The ensemble will perform in the Serbian National Theatre, on Jovan Đorđević stage, on 21 October at 7 p.m.

The entrance is free with tickets you can find at the ticket offices of the Serbian National Theatre.

In addition to famous ballet performances, ballet performers of the Cairo Opera will perform traditional Egyptian dance.

The ballet night of the Cairo Opera is part of the ‘Second Europe’ 4programme arch, which will be performed on the occasion of the 64th Belgrade Book Fair during which Egypt is a special guest.

It is organised by the Serbian National Theatre in cooperation with the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Serbia, with the support of the ‘Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture’, as well as Provincial Government and Provincial Secretariat for Culture.

The Ballet of Cairo Opera House was founded in 1966 as the part of the Ballet Institute at the Academy of Arts. The first production of the Ballet was the Bahčaršija Sebil directed by Leonid Lavrovsky, former director of the Bolshoi Theatre.  After that, the Ballet ensemble added other famous ballets, such as: Giselle, the Nutcracker, Paquita, Swan Lake and Don Quixote, and moder ballets of Egyptian composers and choreographers, such as: Osiris, Hassan and Nayima, Egyptian Night and Nile.  Since 1973, the Ballet has performed abroad numerous times, including the former Yugoslavia. The Ballet Ensemble of Cairo Opera became the part of the National Cultural Centre in 1991, and former director of the Abdel Moneim Camel Centre added his performances of ballets Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake, the Nutcracker, Cinderella, Pirate, Carmina Burana and Bolero. The Ballet performs regularly in Mexico, France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Korea, Austria, USA, China, Czech Republic, Italy, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Canada, Russia and in Mauritius.

The ‘Second Europe’ programme arch, will present different, hidden, evocative, minority culture through diverse programme such as ‘Synergy’ Theatre Festival of Language Minorities, minority media, ‘programmes created by ‘Superpower’ people with disabilities, performances of emerging bands from Europan Capitals of Culture, media art from the female perspective, ‘Cinema Now’ film art, etc. during two months, until 15 December.
