Symphony Orchestra of Vojvodina conducted by Mikica Jevtić performed ‘Peter and the Wolf’ symphony fairy tale for children by Sergei Prokofiev in the ‘Vrdniča Kula’ etno complex in Vrdnik on Saturday, 3 November. Actor Dragan Vujić Vujke, the first man of Terazije Theatre, joined the orchestra as the narrator.

Entrance to the concert was free of charge, and new bus route no. 86, Novi Sad-Irig-Vrdnik, was changed in the period from 9:50 a.m, from the main bus station in Novi Sad to the ‘Vrdnička Kula’ etno complex, while the return was organised in the period from 4:15 p.m.

The concert was performed under the patronage of the ‘Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture’ Foundation, as one of the projects financed by the funds allocated from the budget of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina within the open call of the ‘Audience in Focus’ Foundation.

Having in mind that cultural institutions, such as Symphony Orchestra of Vojvodina, have crucial role in bringing together cultural heritage and contemporary cultural, creative work and wider audience, the ‘Novi Sad 2021’ Foundation left the ‘comfort zone’ and brought values of contemporary creative work to the youngest audience by organising this extraordinary concert at unusual place.

About Symphony Fairy Tale

Sergei Prokofiev, composer of the ‘Peter and the Wolf’, wanted to teach young listeners how to listen to the orchestra and understand its content. In that sense, he had exciting challenge – how to bring the abstract art closer to preschool and school children and how to present instruments of huge symphony orchestra.

Composer found the inspiration for writing the symphony fairy tale in the story about boy called Peter, who manages to catch evil wolf with the help of animals and hunters. Every character from the fairy tale was presented with an orchestra instrument. Clarinet presents the cat, flute presents the little bird, oboe presents duck, horn presents the wolf, bassoon presents grandfather and string instruments present Peter. The ‘Audience in Focus’ programme was initiated by the ‘Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture’ Foundation at the end of 2017 with the aim to strengthen cultural institutions located on the territory of the City of Novi Sad and municipalities of Sremski Karlovci, Irig and Beočin, in the process of audience development, in order to increase citizens’ participation in public cultural life.

The performance of the symphony fairy tale by Sergei Prokofiev is part of the strategy of raising capacity of Fruška Gora, which is developed by the ‘Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture’ Foundation in cooperation with the Provincial Government. In the following period, the ‘Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture’ Foundation will implement more than 30 cultural projects, which will include 11 cultural institutions, over 300 cultural workers and more than 40 non-governmental organisations.
