The premiere of the ‘Gradić’ documentary, which introduces the audience to the work in conservation, restoration and rehabilitation of immovable cultural heritage, as well as the archaeological excavations, presented through the example of reconstruction of the Suburbium of the Petrovaradin Fortress, will take place on Tuesday, 21 March in the Svilara Cultural Station at 8:30 p.m. 

The film was implemented by the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of the City of Novi Sad and the Craft Film Collective, and the project was co-funded by the ‘Novi Sad 2021’ Foundation within the ‘Audience in Focus’ public call. The idea behind the film is to present, in a simple and picturesque way, the whole process of work on the protection of cultural monuments and thus bring this unique cultural institution in charge of preserving tangible cultural heritage closer to citizens. 

Svilara as the ‘Culture on the Palm’

Citizens of Novi Sad will have the opportunity to see the premiere of the film about the Suburbium in the Svilara Cultural Station within the ‘Culture on the Palm’ international project – a project focused on the research, promotion and presentation of cultural heritage of Novi Sad and Szeged, in order to enhance cooperation between the two cities in the field of culture and sustainable cultural tourism.

Within this project, created through Serbia and Hungary cross-border coopertaion (IPA CBC Hungary Serbia Programme), the Svilara Cultural Station will host the exhibition of the same name, whose opening is scheduled for Monday, 18 March. The exhibition includes a selected collection of photographs taken during the implementation of the project, which represents the immovable cultural assets of Novi Sad and Szeged.

During the implementation of this project, a Study on the cultural and historical heritage of Novi Sad and wider urban area with the suburbs, was also made in order to bring the cultural heritage of Novi Sad closer to visitors, tourists, as well as the citizens of Novi Sad. In addition to text, 100 objects described in the Study are followed by 418 photographs, of which dozens will be shown at this exhibition.

The ‘Culture on the Palm’ brings the ‘Unrestrained Harmony’ performance to the Svilara Cultural Station on 25 March. The performance presents the dramatisation of life and work of Paul Abraham, composer, pianist and conductor – a person from Vojvodina, who gained world fame and built his career in Austria-Hungary, Germany, France, USA and Cuba during the first half of the 20th century.

The idea for the show was created from the need to present the (non)harmony of professional career, private life and influence on popular and film music. The ‘Unrestrained Harmony’ refers to Paul Abraham himself, whose life was like a ‘Wheel of Fortune’ that is turning around, while the music gave him stability and maintained a balance for the rest of his life.

The ‘Faces of Bačka’ exhibition of photographs was also created within the ‘Culture on the Palm’ project.

It covers dozens of photographs of Bačka by Augustin Jurig, award-winning photographer, cameraman and member of the Association of Artists of Applied Arts and Designers of Vojvodina.

The ‘Culture on the Palm’ project also aims to promote Novi Sad as the European Capital of Culture 2021, by emphasising the cooperation with other cities in the region.
