Four cultural events in the final race for the title of European Capital of Culture

In the light of the final preparations of the City of Novi Sad candidacy for the prestigious title of European Capital of Culture 2021, Novi Sad will host four important cultural events. This weekend in Novo naselje, from August 26th to 28th, the second „21114“ film festival will be held. From August 29th to September 15th, Novi Sad proudly presents International Contemporary Art Festival „The Danube Dialogues“ with the main theme „Art in the environment of global uncertainty.“ The concept of Novi Sad candidacy for European Capital of Culture, under the slogan „4 new bridges“ will be presented at the regional Literary Conference Book Talk in Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection on September 1st and 2nd, while one of the most anticipated cultural events not only in Novi Sad, but in the region, the exhibition „New religion“ by British artist Damian Hirst, will be held from September 2nd to Ocotber 14th at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina.

The City of Novi Sad is a candidate for the prestigious title of European Capital of Culture in 2021, when it will be, for the first time, available to cities and countries outside the European Union, while the winner will be known in October. At the very finish of the candidacy, which was realized with the support of the EXIT Foundation, Novi Sad will once again prove to be the true cultural capital of various contents, which will, in accordance with the program concept „4 new bridges“, will be held in the next few weeks.

The first conceptual bridge bears the name Freedom and refers to creative industries and youth, and in light of this „bridge“ Novi Sad will host the exhibition „New religion“ one of the most influential, most innovative and most successful artists, the winner of the prestigious Turner Prize, Damien Hirst. The exhibition is organized by the British Council , the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina and the London gallery Paull Stolper. The visitors will be able to see 44 graphics and four sculptures that make up the „New religion“ and function as a cycle of frescoes – from „Creation of the world“ to „Last Judgment.“ Visit MSUV for more information.

„Bridge” Hope refering to cultural capacities and public spaces, presents the film festival „21114“ of Novo kulturno naselje association. In order to decentralize cultural offer Novo kulturno naselje will in this part of the city present representative films of domestic production, as well as a selection of documentary films, and from August 26th to 28th the visitors of the festival will be able to enjoy in two international film events, „Catch this day with me / Catch the film „and “Film front „. The Festival of Contemporary Art “ The Danube Dialogues”, in the Gallery Bel Art in Novi Sad will gather artists from 14 countries of the extended Danube region, and the theme of the festival is „Art in the environment of global uncertainty“, which is very close to the theme of New „bridge“ of Novi Sad candidacy for the European Capital of Culture, which emphasizes the cultural heritage and hospitality. In the light of the fourth „bridge“, Rainbow, which covers issues of conflict and migration, the concept of the „Novi Sad 2021“ Project will be presented at the regional Literary Conference Book Talk. The most influental regional authors, Muharem Bazdulj, Svetlana Slapšak, Vladimir Arsenijevic, Ante Tomić, Ivan Ivanji and many many others, will discuss the most important topics in this area. The European Capital of Culture was established in order to highlight the richness and diversity of European culture, strengthen cultural ties among Europeans, connect people from different European countries, meet other cultures, promote mutual understanding and strengthen the sense of Europeanness. Novi Sad 2021, as a platform for the development of creative potentials of Novi Sad, aims to motivate and inspire workers in culture, but also all citizens to reconsider the current values and set new goals towards democratic cultural development of the city. The contemporary identity of Novi Sad, revitalization of cultural heritage, reconstruction of old and opening new spaces for culture, development of international and inter-sectoral cooperation, fostering intercultural dialogue, decentralization of culture, developing cultural participation of citizens, are just some of the principles of cultural development to which the project Novi Sad 2021 stands for.
