Heritage Walks Discover the Rabbit Museum in Petrovaradin
19/07/2019

What is the symbol of the Rabbit Museum? Why is it different in comparison to other exhibitions and museums? Why and how Nikola Džafo, artist and cultural worker, used a rabbit for the presentation of wider picture of life and society?

Walks through the Rabbit Museum will give us the answers and first walk is scheduled for Saturday, 20 July at 5 p.m. The entrance is free.

Heritage walks through the Rabbit Museum will comprise a short introduction to the history of the part of Petrovaradin where the Rabbit Museum is located (Koste Nađa Street no. 30), museum visit and presentation of the collection, a tasting of rabbit wine and cookies. Another two walks will be organised on 27 July and 3 August.

The collection itself covers the topics of art, development of ecological awareness, social engagement, which points out all flaws and illnesses of a society.

The importance of private collections and private museums will be discussed, as well as their tourist potentials.

The Rabbit Museum is the artistic project by Nikola Džafo and he has been working on it for almost two decades, with the aim to create private museum, which, according to the Law, is still not possible to establish. The collection consists of around two thousand pieces, and we will have a chance to see only part of it.

The first retrospective of Džafo’s project was presented in the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina in 2011, and the Museum became public for the first time on 2 September 2006, at the 12th Biennial of Art in Pančevo.

The Walks through the Rabbit Museum are part of the ‘Heritgae Walks’ project of the ‘Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture’. The general aim of the ‘Heritage Walks’ project is to encourage citizens to get involved in preservation of cultural heritage through contemporary methods of interpretation of personal memory and experience.

Within the ‘Heritage Walks’ project, from 28 January, when the call was opened, until 21 February, when it was closed, 32 applications were submitted, and 11 projects of associations in Novi Sad were chosen. They will have a chance to tell a story about the part of the city that has some special importance in a different way, as well as to contribute to the revelation of secrets of our city.
