The candidacy of Novi Sad for the European Capital of Culture will include the long tradition of nurturing cycling culture, which is one of the things that makes Novi Sad, as a city in the plain, recognisible.
In 1894, the first bicycle shop was opened in Novi Sad, and in 1900 the first race was held.
Today, Novi Sad is one of the rare cities in the region that enables bicycle renting and the Critical Mass movement gather several hundreds of citizens of Novi Sad of all ages and promotes riding bicycles as a healthy and fun way to travel.
In order to promote the candidacy of Novi Sad for the European Capital of Culture in 2021, we made a velocipede, modeled on the fist bicycle that was ridden on streets of Novi Sad, and we will place it in multiple places in Novi Sad, where visitors will have a chance to ride it and take photos, and see how did it feel to ride a bicycle such as this one.
The velocipede will placed at Štrand (5-25 August), and on 25 August it will be next to the Boat Theatre.
During September and October, residents of Novo Naselje, Detelinara and other parts of the city will have the opportunity to ‘ride’ this bike. We will inform the public about precise locations and time.
