Tasty food and good music, drawing and weaving workshops, as well as charities, will be part of marking the Neighbour’s Day in the Egység and Svilara Cultural Stations on 31 May.
‘If neighbours communicate, share ideas and spend time together, the greater is the possibility to understand and solve problems in their community. Many solutions require creativity and there is a great significance of the European Capital of Culture – to contribute to dialogue and thus encourage neighbours to creatively solve problems and improve the quality of life in the community’, said Milica Rašković from the Programme Development Sector of the ‘Novi Sad 2021’ Foundation.
This holiday, which has been celebrated for almost 20 years, first in Paris and then in other European cities, as a reaction to the growing alienation, has been included in the ‘Future of Europe’ programme platform when Novi Sad will show its most important characteristics, solidarity, a culture of community, and good interpersonal relations.
Beans for Neighbours in Egység
Those who enjoy cooking can make their favourite meals at home and bring them to the Egység Cultural Station at 4 p.m., when the Neighbour’s Buffet will be organised. The Egység team will prepare one of the traditional Serbian meals – beans. Before that, the joint action of sprucing up Egység will start at 2 p.m. and it will include environmental arrangement, grass cutting, picking up the garbage.
For skilled and creative hands, as well as for those who have creative ideas, a workshop for arranging spring flowers will begin at 5 p.m., and the youngest who like acrobatics and physical activity will enjoy the Circus at 6.30 p.m.
Europe Neighbour’s Day will also be an opportunity for the citizens of Novi Sad to show their humanity at the Humanitarian Flea market. All preserved things that you do not need anymore will be collected from 6.30 p.m. until 9 p.m. in Egység, and they will be replaced for donations for the treatment of uninhabited animals in the following days.
This holiday will also be celebrated with music, so at 8 p.m. the Jazz Trio will perform.
Pastries and Interesting Workshops in Svilara
The youngest citizens from the ‘Dreamland’ kindergarten in Novi Sad will show what a good neighbour is like, what he does for a living and what he looks like. They will draw a good neighbour in the Svilara Cultural Station on 31 May at 11 a.m.
At 1 p.m. cleaning the park and cooking in the kettle will be organised, and throughout the day, anyone who passes through the Almaš neighbourhood and visit the cultural station will be able to taste creative pastries with the motifs of Svilara.
Members of the ‘Our Hands’ Association from Sremski Karlovci will show the technique of weaving and making home-made products at workshop that starts at 3 p.m.
The ‘Scream Academy’ will show how drawing can be a kind of therapy through a workshop where everyone can take part, starting at 4 p.m., and the Association Watercolorists of Vojvodina will organise an exhibition at 7 p.m.
If you know an interesting story about your neighbourhood, if you have memories to share in order not to go into oblivion or, on the other hand, if you want to get acquainted with the charms of the Almaš Neighbourhood, you should be part of the programme that starts at 5 p.m. in Svilara, when stories about this part of the city will be spoken.
DJ Evernew will be in charge of good music that starts at 7 p.m.
The ‘Future of Europe’ platform will include educative and circus workshops, exhibitions, festivals, concerts, theatre plays and many other activities. The focus is on children and young fellow citizens, who will have the opportunity to find cultural content according to their interests, but also to engage in creating new, different cultural contents, to learn about European values and to show how they can contribute to cultural image of the city.
