Sremski Karlovci and Novi Sad Together to the Title of European Capital of Culture 2021
09/08/2015

УThe film weekend at Sremski Karlovci was opened with the film ‘The Elusive Summer of ‘68’ on Friday, 7 August. The audience filled a very attractive area on the lookout on the Magarčev Breg that has a beautiful view of the Danube, Karlovci and ‘half’ of Fruška Gora.

– It is a pleasure to see so many young people in the audience because it shows that Sremski Karlovci is really lacking the space in which we can organise not only film screenings but also theatrical performances and others cultural events. Fortunately, we have built and decorated this beautiful lookout point and this film weekend is our direct support to the city of Novi Sad to obtain the prestigious title of European Capital of Culture 2021, because together with Sremski Karlovci it has rich cultural and historical heritage, it certainly deserves it – said Rajko Marinković Deputy Major of Sremski Karlovci.

Momčilo Bajac, president of the Organisation Board of the candidacy of Novi Sad for the ECoC 2021, reminded the audience that the European Capital of Culture is the largest cultural project in the world.

– This fact alone speaks volumes, that the project which was created 30 years ago, became so popular that it is a prestigious one today. It is a great honour when a city, and annually only two European cities receive the honorary title of European Capital of Culture, has a chance to be the capital of culture for 365 days of the year in the whole of Europe. It is a unique opportunity to offer your programmes to Europe, to exchange programmes, to improve your city and your life for all 365 days in a year for the whole of Europe – said Bajac before the screening of the cult film by Goran Paskaljević, which was filmed in Sremski Karlovci in 1984.

Due to technical problems the new domestic film ‘Enclave’ directed by Goran Radovanović was not screened on Saturday evening as it was planned, so tonight there will be two screenings: first ‘Enclave’ at 20:30, and then the film ‘The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain’ at 22:30.

Film weekend at Sremski Karlovci is organised by the ‘Karlovac Art Workshop’ Cultural Centre in cooperation with the Organisation Team Novi Sad 2021.
