The Svilara Cultural Station will host the exhibition of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, one of the most important representatives of impressionism, from 3 until 20 July. The exhibition will be opened symbolically at 20:21 (8:21 p.m.), with professional exhibition guidance by the curator from the Gallery of Matica Srpska. The entrance is free of charge.
The fourth programme platform ‘The Fortress of Peace’, launched by the ‘Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture’, will be closed with the exhibition of more than 20 posters by world famous painter, graphic artist and illustrator.
During the following three weeks, Svilara will revive the spirit of France from the late 19th century, i.e. period in which Lautrec lived and created, since other cultural contents will be organised, in accordance with the exhibition topic. The seventh art, through film screenings, including the documentary about Toulouse-Lautrec, will take us to France. The ‘Manush’ jazz trio, who will perform on 9 July 8:30 p.m., will give us a sense of Lautrec’s France.
Lautrec gained fame as one of the first artists who created posters, as one form of advertising, and the ‘Moulin Rouge’ poster was the most famous one. Therefore, professors from the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad will hold the lecture on the topic of posters, as well as the ways in which we can express and promote cultural programmes.
In addition to the exhibition, films, concerts and lectures, visitors will have a chance to taste drinks characteristic for France from the late 19th century.
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born on 24 November in 1864, and died on 9 September 1901. The misunderstood artist had rigid attitude when it comes to his appearance and appearance of other people, since he had a form of osteoporosis. He was not in search for beauty, but truth, thus he presented his characters realistically, sometimes even uglier than they were in reality.
Lautrec’s life can be described as bohemian. Since he came from a wealthy family, he ran from the elite and count life and spent his days with ‘ordinary’ world, founding the shelter in cabaret.
No matter how his life was hard, he managed to make revolution in art and bravely introduce something completely different in French painting, which was inconceivable for his contemporaries.
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec – the third big name from the world of art, whose works citizens of Novi Sad had a chance to see within the ‘Fortress of Peace’ programme platform from 7 June until 7 July, with the aim to prepare Novi Sad for 2021, when Novi Sad will become the centre of European culture.
