Kaleidoscope of Culture: Exhibition at the Railway Station Opened
19/09/2019

The ‘This Building Truly Talks’ performance by the winner of the 14th Prague Quadrennial, one of the most significant world manifestations dedicated to scenic art, will accompany the ‘Swiss Style Now’ exhibition that was opened in the Railway Station Hall on 17 September.

This performance by Filip Jovanovski that deals with the problem of the Skopje Railway Station first, and then with the problem of public spaces in general, will have eight performances in the period from 22 until 24 September. It is implemented in cooperation with the ‘Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture’ and Bitef. The performance within the project is scheduled for Sunday, 22 September at 12 p.m. and 8 p.m., and for 23 and 24 September at 12 p.m., 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.
The Railway Station was thus transformed into a design pavilion within the ‘Kaleidoscope of Culture’. The citizens of Novi Sad will have a chance to get acquainted with one of the most famous design styles that reached its full potential during the ‘50s and ’60s, and is still a favourite among experts.

‘The Swiss style actually determined what is modern and contemporary in the graphic design. It appeared hundred years ago, and during ‘50s and ‘60s it has reached the real form we recognise today. It is seductive because it has that structure, that networks, the typographic grid where you could, for the first time in history, arrange the graphic elements on a poster, catalogue or book in your aesthetic discretion in an invisible grid, but with the idea of it being objective, clean, clear, recognisable and communicative without any decorative elements that were characteristic for the previous epoch’, said Slavimir Stojanović Futro, one of the most recognisable graphic designers, at the opening.

The exhibition is implemented in cooperation with the ‘Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture’ and PDP Conference of creative media. It will be open in the Svilara Cultural Station until 15 October.
‘I think it is a great privilege for Novi Sad to host such an exhibition. The setting is truly impressive and has over 320 exhibits. There are numerous posters, books, magazines, flyers and so on. What is even more significant is where it all comes from. In fact, Switzerland is one of the leading countries when it comes to design, visual communications in general’, stressed Dajana Vujaklija, director of the PDP Conference.

The authors of the exhibition are the ‘Neo Neo’ studio, Erich Brechbühl, Noël Leu, and Alexander Tochilovsky from Switzerland. Curatorial guiding will also be organised, and the curators will be co-authors at the end of the exhibition – the ‘Neo Neo’ studio arrives in October.

The ‘Kaleidoscope of Culture’ is the programme arch of the ‘Nov Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture’ project, which turns Novi Sad into the ‘city of scene’ at more than 80 locations from 24 to 30 August. Part of the ‘Kaleidoscope of Culture’ are Street Musicians Festival – Gradić Fest, Piano City, Festival of Chamber Music, etc.

It connects spaces and programmes, as well as the actors themselves: the ‘Kaleidoscope’ presents a unique image of the diversity of Novi Sad through multiple arts, with its cultural institutions, non-institutional scene, artists and citizens themselves. With more than 400 programmes, everyone will have a chance to design their own kaleidoscope of culture.
