After Damien Hirst, one of the most influential, innovative and successful artists, Novi Sad will host Grayson Perry and his exhibition ‘The Vanity of Small Differences’.

The works of Grayson Perry will be exhibited from 7 April to 20 May in the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina, and the City of Novi Sad, as a European Capital of Culture in 2021, is the first among five cities where the British Council will present this exhibition by the end of the year.

‘The Vanity of Small Differences’ consists of six monumental tapestries rich in content, details and colours that show many eccentricities and unique features that are related to life in Great Britain – from interior design to British cuisine, political protests and gossips about lives of celebrities. Visitors will also have a chance to see eight prints of the works by William Hogarth, 20 facsimiles and three documentary films created during Perry’s travels through Britain in the preparatory phase of the project.

As stated on the website of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina, Grayson Perry is one of the most famous contemporary British artists of his generation, well-known for his ceramics, sculptures, drawings, graphics and tapestries, as well as for his unconventional gender identity and eccentric female alter-ego named Claire. He was awarded the prestigious Turner Prize in 2003. He uses experiences from folk art and traditional crafts in order to produce highly decorative works with intimate content, distorting often elitist divisions within the academic art scene and making it more open for experiments.

We are proud to say that Grayson Perry, after very successful ‘New Religion’ exhibition by Damien Hirst, is the second great artists in just six months who presents his works in our city, which is an indicator that Novi Sad is shaping to become a regional cultural centre, with a tendency to become a European one by 2021.

‘The Vanity of Small Differences’ exhibition by Grayson Perry is organised by the British Council and Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina in cooperation with the ‘Novi Sad 2021’ foundation, and supported by the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Serbia, Provincial Secretariat for Culture, Public Information and Relations with Religious Communities, City of Novi Sad Directorate for Culture, and KPMG.
