Open Call for Artistic Residence in Austria
05/02/2020

The new call within the Plants AiR residential programme provides the opportunity for all those whose focus is on contemporary photography art to reside and work in the Austrian city of Graz.

During the stay in Graz, it is necessary to conduct a research and make a series of photographs that will deal with the topic of (e)migrations and raise the issue of current motives for moving from Serbia to Austria. The photographs will be exhibited at the exhibition in Graz. The main ideas of the call are promoting intercultural dialogue, presenting a future perspective and finding a place to meet and interact, comparing the common space of Serbian and Austrian culture.

The candidates should meet the following criteria:

  1. to be of legal age/citizen of the Republic of Serbia – preference will be given to photographers up to 40 years of age
  2. to work in the field of contemporary visual art, preferably having experience in working with extended media
  3. to speak English or German fluently
  4. to have not been previously selected for the residential programmes organised by the Foundation or mobility programmes (calls for programmes: Platns AiR, Kizuna, Mobility etc.)
  5. the preference of this call is given to female artists, who explore, reflect and critically approach the social positions and roles of women through their project proposal, in relation to the stated context of the call. We wish to contribute to creating more opportunities for female artists who are unequally and certainly under-represented in photography by emphasizing this advantage.
  6. the desirable characteristics of the artist are openness, sociability and highly developed communication skills, as well as a strong desire to learn about the culture of Graz. Preference is also given to artists who have experience in international projects.

In order to support Novi Sad artists within the European Capital of Culture project and facilitate decentralisation of the artistic scene, the advantage will be given to the candidates who work and live in Novi Sad or on the territory of Zone 021 (municipalities of Irig, Beočin and Sremski Karlovci).

The call is being implemented in cooperation with the ‘Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture’ and Association of Visual Artists Styria – ‘Berufsvereinigung Bildender KünstlerInnen Steiermark’, Graz, Austria (BVBK STMK).

The residency is being implemented through the ‘Common Spaces of Tomorrow – Bridges from Graz to Novi Sad’ programme.

The residence will be implemented from 30 July until 28 August 2020.

BVBK STMK and the Cultural City Network Graz provide the artist with accommodation, travel costs (exclusively by bus or train), fee and costs of materials for the artwork in the total amount of EUR 900.

All interested candidates should send the following documents:

1. CV in English, which mustn’t be longer than 4 pages of A4 paper format (listing professional experience in art work, the most important exhibitions, presentations, collaborations, previous residences in similar programmes, etc.)

2. accompanying letter in English between 150-250 words (in which he/she suggests the idea for the project that will be implemented during the residential programme in Graz)

3. portfolio of 3-5 selected works collected in one PFD file with size no larger than 5 MB

It is necessary to send the above-mentioned documents to the following e-mail: plantsair@ns2021.rs marked as the ‘Residential Programme Graz 2020’ no later than 1 March 2020 at midnight.
