Day by day, Novi Sad strengthens its position as the regional cultural centre and proves that it is a rightful bearer of the title European Capital of Culture for 2021. Year This is supported by the announcement that, after very popular exhibitions of famous and acclaimed artists Damien Hirst and Grayson Perry, Novi Sad will also host an exhibition of the four great Spanish artists.
‘The Four Cats’ (Cuatro Gatos) exhibition comprises circa 50 original graphics of the biggest Spanish masters: Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), Salvador Dalí (1904-1989), Joan Miró (1893-1983), and Antoni Tàpies (1923-2012).
As stated at the website of the City Museum of Novi Sad, ‘Cuatro gatos’ exhibition displays graphics as a medium of the most important artists of modern times. Famous names: Picasso, Dalí, Miró, Tàpies, each of them individually an exceptionally innovative artist, opened new horizons of the art in twentieth century, and created new paths in visual language. Within this richness of ideas, many contemporary artists seek and find creative inspiration.
The four of them were very prolific artists, and they created important graphics oeuvres. The exhibition will also display the works from the Picasso’s last period, when graphic plate served for daily meditations of an old man about eternal beauty of a woman’s body and Eros.
The exhibition got its name after a famous cafe in Barcelona – ‘Cuatro gatos’ (Els Quatre Gats), famous for being a popular meeting place for the biggest art names from the beginning of the twentieth century, primarily Picasso. The cafe was opened in 1897, and the expression ‘four cats’ in Catalan slang actually means ‘only a few people’. The cafe was the meeting place of ‘only a few people’ who set foundations of the new art movement in Spain – Modernism.
The selection of works that will be exhibited at ‘The Four Cats’ exhibition was made by the collectors Lazar and Živa Vujić from Ljubljana, who are also the owners of the graphics.
City Museum of Novi Sad, in cooperation with the New Movement gallery from Belgrade, organises gala opening of the exhibition in the Foreign Art Collection gallery (Dunavska Street no. 29) on Thursday, 4 May at 7 p.m. The exhibition will last until 4 June 2017.
