The father or the prince of pop art, the way they called him in media, believed that everybody has their 15 minutes of fame, and his 15 minutes last for more than 5 decades. The citizens of Novi Sad will have a chance to see what made Andy Warhol the famous pioneer of revolutionary art, within the ‘Andy Warhol’ exhibition until 25 June, while on 21 June at 7 p.m., Uroš Đurić, our famous artist, will provide a professional guided tour through the exhibition.
The exhibition will be organised in the Foreign Art Collection of the City Museum of Novi Sad (Dunavska Street no. 29) and it will be opened in the period from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. The entrance is free.
Professional guided tour through the exhibition is part of the ‘Fortress of Peace’ programme platform of the ‘Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture’ Foundation, and curator will be Uroš Đurić, multimedia artist, ‘the Seeker’ in the ‘Potera’ game show, the ‘Angel’ from the cult film ‘Mi Nismo Anđeli’, which is similar itself to Andy Warhol, the founder of pop art.
The exhibition includes 28 Warhol’s works, such as famous ‘Marilyn Diptych’, ‘Mao’, ‘Campbell’s Soup Cans’, as well as the ‘Speed Skater’, which was the symbol of the competition of speed skating at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo.
Andy Warhol had a wish to break down prejudice about elite art and popularise it, i.e. to bring it closer to people, and this is why his works present the connection of avant-garde and commercial.
He believed that it is was not possible to express oneself through only one type of media, thus he worked in the fields of different artistic forms such as performance, film production, video installation and writing, but he was the most known for combining classical and mainstream aesthetics.
Warhol changed the 20th century while working and creating in the Factory studio in New York. Besides his muse Marylin Monroe, numerous famous people were the source of his inspiration: Elizabeth Taylor, Elvis Presley, Mick Jagger, Jackie Kennedy, Muhammad Ali and Edie Sedgwick.
The prince of pop art, who once said that artists do not differ from other people, but that the art is a business as any other, still has a big influence on art, fashion, music and film. His fame is constant, and he has become an inspiration for many people.
The ‘Fortress of Peace’ is the fourth programme platform of the ‘Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture’ project that promotes Novi Sad as the symbol of peace, communion and tolerance. Within the platform, 20 events – concerts, exhibitions, film screenings and theatre plays will be held until 7 July, and Novi Sad will get the monument of peace entitled ‘One Day…’, which was designed by Yoko Ono, a world famous multimedia artists.
