Snežana Petković, a photographer from Novi Sad, has been selected to travel to the Austrian city of Graz, as part of the Plants AiR residence programme, where she will conduct a research and make a series of photographs on the topic of (e)migration and current motives for moving from Serbia to Austria.
The main ideas of the call are promoting intercultural dialogue, presenting a future perspective and finding a place to meet and interact, comparing the common space of Serbian and Austrian culture.
‘What intrigues me most is the fact that, although many people daily emigrate from Serbia to Austria, the number of things illegally imported into Serbia is even greater. Relying on my previous research, I would like to map things that are imported into Serbia, drawing a parallel between two such different transactions – people and objects’, this is how Snežana presents part of her idea of working within a residence.
Snežana is a senior student at the Department of Photography of the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad, and has already had numerous exhibitions, projects, residences and awards. The Novi Sad artist participated in the World Biennial of Student Photography, the first Chinese-Serbian Youth Photo Festival where she was part of a group exhibition in Beijing. Her works have also been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Arts in Vojvodina, the Gallery of Matica Srpska, while she independently exhibited at the CK13 Gallery and the Campus Cultural Centre.
The photographs shot in Graz will be presented at the exhibition.
The call is being implemented in cooperation with the ‘Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture’ and Association of Visual Artists Styria – ‘Berufsvereinigung Bildender KünstlerInnen Steiermark’, Graz, Austria (BVBK STMK) whose representatives made the decision to select a candidate.
The residency is being implemented through the ‘Common Spaces of Tomorrow – Bridges from Graz to Novi Sad’ programme.

The aim of the ‘Artist in Residence’ (Plants AiR) programme, which is being implemented within the ‘Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture’ project, is internationalisation of local artistic scene, education and networking of local artists with foreign artists and organisations. Within the programme, artists from Novi Sad are supported to implement outgoing residences, as well as to enable foreign artists to visit Novi Sad and to exchange experience and knowledge with local artists through work.
