Prior to the celebration of 170 years of its existence the reconstruction of the facade of the Gallery of Matica srpska has started. It is the final phase of the complete decoration of the building, which keeps huge artistic value of great importance for the preservation of tradition and the development of Serbian art of modern times.
Director of the Gallery of Matica srpska, Tijana Palkovljević- Bugarski, points out that over a long period of time they have been working on improving this exhibition space into a place of high museological standards. So far, the basements was successfully repaired and additional 700 square meters that were not in use were put in operation, which allowed increasing the capacity of the area for conservation studios and workshops, expand depots and improve the storage conditions of artworks. The roof was also replaced as well as an elevator installed, on the basis of the project renovation of the museum from 1956, so the artworks are now easily accessible to people with disabilities. Now begins the reconstruction of the facade as the final step in order to welcome 2017, when the 170 years of existence will be marked, in the building whose external appearance is worthy of high artistic value of the collection it heritage.
– The plan is to replace the windows, repair the facade, reconstruct the entrance and the surroundings of the building. Restoration should be completed by next year, when the gallery celebrates 170 years of its existence. We intend to shine in all the glory. We hope that in May all our items and exhibits will be available to the public – said Tijana Palkovljević-Bugarski.
Depots are renovated and prepared to, during the renovation of the facade, temporary place works of art on all museum standards.
Renovation of the facade of the building was provided by the Ministry of Culture with 30 million dinars.
During the works on the restoration of the facade, the building of the Gallery of Matica srpska will be closed to visitors, but in cooperation with other cultural institutions the audience will be able to enjoy the planned exhibitions and program activities.
Tijana Palkovljević-, who is also Deputy Chair of the Arts Council of the project Novi Sad European Capital of Culture 2021, and a member of the delegation who presented the candidacy of Novi Sad in the finals in Brussels, sincerely believes that the renovated building and programs to be organized in it will present the City of Novi Sad in the best way.
