Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture project of national importance

The „Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture“ foundation was formed which will manage the project.

The year we see off in Novi Sad will be remembered as the year in which Novi Sad was declared the European Capital of Culture 2021 and European Youth Capital 2019. The last day of 2016 brought another important news – the project „Novi Sad 2021 European Capital of Culture“ was declared at the session of the Government of the Republic of Serbia for a project of national importance and interest!

Based on this decision, the Government of Serbia will provide significant financial resources, which will, among other things, be used for tourism, cultural and all other necessary activities in order to present Novi Sad to Europe and the world in the best light.

The last days of 2016 were used to, as specified in the application book called „Bidbook“ and based on the guidelines of the Panel of independent experts delegated by the European Commission, to form a special foundation that will in the next five years guide the project Novi Sad European Capital of Culture.

After the previous decision of the City Assembly of Novi Sad that Cultural Center of Novi Sad forms Foundation „Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture“ the members of the Novi Sad City Assembly appointed on Wednesday December 28th, as director of the Foundation Nemanja Milenković, who have managed the project „New sad 2021,“ which brought our city the title of European Capital of Culture 2021, as well as members of the Steering Committee of the Foundation.

In the Gallery of Matica srpska yesterday was held a constituent meeting of the Steering Committee of the Foundation „Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture“ where director of the Gallery of Matica srpska, Tijana Palkovljević – Bugarski, was elected for president. Also, the Statute of the Foundation was adopted, which enables to carry out all the remaining steps in the final formation of the Foundation.

– The Steering Committee is composed of experts from various fields such as architecture and urban planning, tourismology, communicology, economics and cultural projects, particularly those related to European cultural projects – said Tijana Palkovljević – Bugarski and stressed that the constitution of the Committee and the adoption of the Statute are the basis for the beginning of a successful work and are the culmination of all that has been done in 2016.

As the final step in legal formation, director of the Foundation „Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture“, Nemanja Milenković, today in the Business Registers Agency filed an application for registration of the Foundation in the Register of Companies.

– It has been over two months since the declaration in Brussels and from today we can say that Foundation „Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture“ has formally started operating and will coordinate all the actions and projects to be implemented during 2021, when Novi Sad, I proudly believe, will be one of the three European Capitals of Culture. Sticking with the motto „you do not have to be great to get started, but you have to start to be great“, the team of „Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture“ Foundation will continue  the process that European Capital of Culture is not something to be declared, it is being created – said Milenković.
