11/05/2016

Day of Victory over Fascism and Europe Day on May 9th will be marked today in Serbia and throughout Europe by series of events and paying respect to the victims of the Second World War. Europe Day was established as a day of remembrance of the Declaration by French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, in 1950, which is considered to be the first official step in the emerging EU.

There is no doubt that the period of the Second World War is the most tragic period in the history of Novi Sad. More than 26,000 people have left the city, and according to some estimates, nearly 6,000 people lost their lives.

Novi Sad will mark this important historic date by an evening concert at Liberty Square, in the organization of the Student Cultural Centre Novi Sad. Novi Sad audience will hear Hladno pivo, Marcello and Napeti Quintet and the Del Arno Band as part of „Rhythm of Europe!“ manifestation.

Today, Serbia is so close to becoming a member of Europe Union, and one of the strong indicators of how much has been achieved in the cultural sector is participation in programs Creative Europe, taking tenth place in Europe by number of projects supported in the past two years. What today connects Europe is the European Capital of Culture, a title that connects cultural workers from the entire continent, with the aim of empowering and strengthening European cultural scene. Novi Sad is a finalist in the most prestigious European competition in the field of culture, with the aim to present culture and cultural potential it has, and to connect in a better way with the cultural sector in Europe.
